  • Most Cylinder Failures Are the Element or Thermostat
  • Both Are Electrical Parts — an Electrician's Job

The 30-Second Decision Guide

One question sorts almost every hot water problem: is water going where it shouldn't? Use this to pick your trade:

  • No hot water, no leak → electrician. Cold water with a dry cylinder is nearly always the element, thermostat, switch, wiring or breaker.
  • Lukewarm or inconsistent water → electrician. A fading element or drifting thermostat — electrical both times.
  • Hot water circuit tripping the board → electrician. Current is leaking somewhere in the circuit. Definitely ours.
  • Water pooling under or around the cylinder → plumber. A leaking tank, fitting or valve is a plumbing job, full stop.
  • Dripping or hissing from the relief valve → plumber. Pressure and valves live on the plumbing side.
  • No water pressure or discoloured water → plumber. That's the water supply itself, not the heating of it.

Why 'Electrician First' Is the Right Default

Think about what an electric hot water cylinder actually is: a big insulated tank of water with an electric heater inside it. The tank and pipes almost never fail suddenly — they leak slowly and visibly when they go. The parts that just stop one day are the electric ones: the element that heats, the thermostat that controls it, and the circuit that feeds them.

So when hot water disappears overnight with no leak in sight, the odds overwhelmingly favour an electrical fault. Call a plumber first and one of two things usually happens: they check the water side, find nothing, and tell you to call an electrician — or they subcontract an electrician anyway. Either way you've paid for an extra call-out and waited an extra day for a hot shower.

Calling the electrician first simply runs the odds in the right order. And because cylinders are all we do, we're not a general sparkie squeezing you between jobs — the van is stocked for exactly this fault, every day.

When You Genuinely Need a Plumber — and We'll Tell You

Plenty of cylinder work is honestly plumbing: leaking tanks, failed relief valves, tempering valves, pressure problems, pipe re-runs and full cylinder replacements where the tank itself has rusted out. We don't do that work, we don't pretend to, and we won't charge you to discover it.

What we will do is tell you precisely what we found — 'the electrics test healthy, the tank is weeping at the seam, you need a plumber and here's what to tell them.' That one sentence saves you from paying a second trade to repeat the diagnosis. Some of our best word-of-mouth in Christchurch comes from jobs where we fixed nothing and simply gave someone the right answer quickly.

And if you've already had a plumber out who said 'this one's electrical'? That's us. That handover happens every week, in both directions, and it's exactly how it should work.

6

Hot Water Back

Either way, you know exactly what's wrong within one visit.

Electrician or Plumber? — Common Questions

Both trades work on cylinders, on different parts. Electricians handle the element, thermostat, wiring and switchboard side; plumbers handle the tank, valves, pipes and pressure. Since sudden failures are usually electrical, the electrician is the smarter first call when there's no leak.

Yes — element and thermostat replacement is electrical work and must legally be done by a registered electrician. It's the bread and butter of what we do.

We tell you straight, explain exactly what we found so your plumber doesn't start from scratch, and you only pay the standard call-out for the diagnosis — not for work we didn't do.

A fair question. If the tank itself is sound, a new element or thermostat can buy years of life for a few hundred dollars. If the tank is corroded or weeping, replacement (a plumber-led job) makes more sense — and we'll give you our honest read either way.
