A dodgy thermostat shows up in your taps before it shows up anywhere else. Watch for:

Scalding hot water — a stuck thermostat can let the element heat well past a safe temperature. Treat this one urgently, especially with kids in the house.
Water that swings between hot and cold — inconsistent temperature day to day is classic thermostat behaviour.
Lukewarm water that never gets properly hot — the thermostat may be cutting the element off far too early.
No hot water at all — if the thermostat never calls for heat, the element never switches on, even though it's perfectly fine.

The Right Temperature Matters More Than People Think

There's a sweet spot for cylinder temperature in New Zealand: the water needs to be stored at 60°C to prevent Legionella bacteria growing in the tank, but delivered to your bathroom taps at no more than 55°C to prevent scalding — that part is usually handled by a tempering valve on the plumbing side.

When we replace a thermostat we set it correctly, check the element behaves at the new setting, and if we spot that your system has no tempering valve — common in older Christchurch homes — we'll flag it so you can have a plumber sort that side of it. That's the electrician-first approach: we fix what's ours, and tell you honestly about what isn't.

How We Replace a Cylinder Thermostat

The thermostat sits against the cylinder wall under a cover plate, wired in series with the element. We isolate the power, test the old unit to confirm the fault, fit the correct replacement, and set the temperature properly — not just "somewhere in the middle".

It's usually a quicker job than an element swap because the cylinder doesn't need draining. Most thermostat replacements are done and heating again within the hour, and because we test the element at the same time, you'll know the whole electrical side of your cylinder is healthy — not just the one part that failed today.
